Schwinn Women's Miramar Bicycle (Purple) Review

Schwinn Women's Miramar Bicycle (Purple)

I never considered buying a bike mail-order before, but a special promotion for Amazon credit card holders made it too good of a deal not to try. I am glad I did! The bike arrived in a fairly beat up box but the components were in good condition without any damage. The bike comes 80% assembled. All you have to do is install the handle bars, front wheel, pedals, and seat. The brakes, derailleur, chain, etc. are all pre-assembled. It comes with a owner's manual that has a reasonably good set of assembly instructions (it could use a few more illustrations, in my opinion) with one exception: it does not tell you how to open up the front brakes so that you can install the wheel. I ended up disassembling the brake, which you do not need to do. Search the internet for "linear brake assembly" or similar and you will find instructions (and pictures!) that show you how to open up the brake. It's very simple and should have been in the Schwinn directions. You can probably put the bike together in 10-15 minutes if you know what you are doing. It took me considerably longer than that because of the issues I had with the front brake.
The bike is at the low end of the Schwinn line, and might even be the cheapest bike they make, but it seems to be well constructed and well suited for my purpose: riding around town on paved roads. It has a steel frame, which makes the bike heavier than aluminum or composite framed bikes, so that might be a factor to consider if you plan on frequently hoisting the bike up onto a roof rack (not a factor for me). It has a shock absorber on the front that does a nice job of soaking up minor bumps. The tires have a good thickness to them which also helps make the ride comfortable. The gears shift smoothly and easily, though are not perfectly aligned with the numbers on the dial (I'm sure that can be adjusted). The brakes have a nice pull to them and stop the bike smoothly, quickly, and quietly. The seat is comfortable and the tires have good grip on pavement.
Overall I am quite happy with the bike and recommend it if you are looking for a relatively inexpensive bike for casual riding on paved surfaces.

Schwinn Women's Gateway City Bike - 28" Review

Schwinn Women's Gateway City Bike - 28

First of all it is very cute to look at. It has fenders, rack and chain guard so it looks expensive. The cream color with brown writing it very pretty. We purchased the bike for our 10 1/2 year old daughter who is 5'5. Yes, I said 5'5. She is tall but young so we wanted something that did not have too many gears that might be a little confusing not to mention unnecessary for her. We rode 10 1/2 miles the first day and she never complained about pain like she did with her mountain bike. She was able to shift the gears easily too. The 28 inch hybrid tires make it a smooth ride. I definitely recommend this bike for anyone who enjoys long bike rides or quick rides to the convenience store! All in all, it's a good buy! Happy riding!!

these tires look cool but for mountain riding, they stink. the rubber is too soft within riding about 40 miles on rough terrain the knobs have fallen or ripped off the tires. granted i do ride them hard on mountain trails with lots of rocks and cactus but if you need it for the street, they look great.

I have no idea what Debashish Sahu is talking about in his review. First he says a Schwinn tire would be much better. Then he writes a terrible review on Schwinn Alloy Bicycle Pedals. Everyone & their brother knows Schwinn isn't what it used to be.
I bought a pair from my LBS (local bike shop) for about the same price. Why wait on shipping? The center rib travels quiet & well on city streets & the more aggressive outer tread goes well through the park, light off-road trails or as today (12-15-2010) through light slushy snow still on the road.
Keep 'em pumped up close to the max for city riding. Maybe drop a few pounds out (very few) for off-road. But...then again - I'm a rather large fellow. I keep all the tires on my bicycles pumped pretty full.

Diamondback Cobra 20 Jr Boys Mountain Bike (20-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Cobra 20 Jr Boys Mountain Bike (20-Inch Wheels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great little bike for someone who already knows how to ride a bike. This would not make a good first bike. My son started riding smaller bikes when he was 4 and all of his previous bikes were really cheap but were good for learning. We gave him this one for his 7th birthday and it is really nice. The bike works with much less effort than his earlier bikes largely because the wheel bearings, gearing, brakes, and components are much higher quality. He really likes being able to shift the gears, but he really doesn't know how to use them properly - hopefully that will come soon enough. The only drawbacks are that the bike only has hand brakes, which takes some time for younger riders to master. When they do get it, however, the brakes work much better than a pedal style coaster brake. Also, there is no kick stand, but one can be easily added. One last comment is that we bought this bike from a bike shop and they assembled it and then adjusted it again when we bought it. I'm sure that plays a large role in the quality feel of this bike.

Diamondback Lux Women's Mountain Bike (2011 Model, 26-Inch Wheels) Review

I bought this bike from Sports Chalet 2 month ago. It is light and suspension is good, but stainless steel parts (brakes, spokes) on the bike started to rust after only one month. I've never seen anything like that even with cheap bike I had before. Today I had a spoke broken, and I can see that it's just rusted all the way through. Weight or hard riding was not a problem, I'm only 100 pounds and was riding on the roads. Will take it back to Sports Chalet and see what they will tell me.

Kent Trail Machine Men's Dual Suspension Mountain Bike Review

Kent Trail Machine Men's Dual Suspension Mountain Bike
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this bike to see if I could get back in to the good old sport of mountain biking. This bike was a good encouragement...but I had a few problems with it even after getting it tuned twice.
1) The brakes were never tight enough.
2) The chains were slipping off and hitting the wheels.
3) The wheels were out of line.
But all in all, for the price...I can't really complain...but I'll probably get a new bike as soon as this one falls apart even more.

About Kent Bicycles A family owned company, Kent Bicycles dates back to the early 1900s, when the current president's grandfather immigrated to the U.S. and got a job working for the owner of a bike shop in New York. In 1909, he opened his own bike shop on the Lower East Side. This small bike shop led to a larger store in New Jersey, where his son developed his own passion for the business. In 1947, the son was inspired to start his own company, Philkam Cycle, supplying bikes and parts to stores all over the eastern United States. In 1958, the company changed its name to Kent International and has been supplying Kent products to fun-loving parents and their children ever since.
Amazon.com Bicycle Buying Guide Finding the Right Bike To really enjoy cycling, it's important to find a bicycle that works for you. Here are some things to keep in mind when you're in the market for a new bike:
The Right Ride In general, bikes are broken down into three major categories:
Road and Racing Bikes: As a general rule, road and racing bikes are built for speed and longer distances on paved surfaces. Thinner tires, lightweight 29-inch (700c) wheels, and drop bars that allow for a more aerodynamic position are the norm. Most road bikes, regardless of price, offer many gears for tackling both hilly and flat terrain.
Mountain Bikes: With their larger tires, hill-friendly gearing, and upright position, mountain bikes are very popular for all types of riding, both on pavement and off. Mountain bikes that are designed specifically for rugged trail use typically feature a suspension fork. Some may have rear suspension, as well. A quick change of the tires on any mountain bike--even one that you use regularly on trails--adds to its versatility and makes it a worthy street machine.
Comfort/Cruiser Bikes: For tooling around on bike paths or light trails or for cruising a quiet beach-side lane, comfort/cruiser bikes are the ticket. With a super-relaxed riding position, padded seats, and limited or no gearing, these bikes are made for enjoying the scenery and having fun with the family.

The Right Price A bike's price boils down to three essentials: frame materials, bike weight, and component quality and durability.
Entry level: You'll find a wide range of comfort and cruiser bikes in this category, as well as some lower-end mountain bikes and road bikes. Most will have steel frames and components that are designed to last for several years with frequent use.
Mid-range: Bikes in this range may feature a lighter aluminum frame with mid-range components that keep performing after miles of use. If you're looking for a quality bike that is relatively lightweight and will stand up to abuse, this is the sweet spot. Most serious commuter and touring bikes fall into this category, as do mid-range mountain bikes with a decent front suspension.
High end: Racers and serious enthusiasts who expect lightweight, high-performance components will want to stick to this category. For road bikes, exotic frame materials (carbon fiber, titanium) and ultra-lightweight components can add thousands to the price tag. Mountain bikes in this class often feature advanced front and rear suspension technology, as well as components designed to handle lots of rugged trail action.

The Right Size Fit is crucial for comfort, control, and proper power and endurance on a bike. Here are some basic bike fit tips:
Stand-over Height: To find out if a bike's overall height fits your body, measure your inseam. Next, determine how much clearance you'll need between your crotch and the top tube of the bike. For a mountain bike, you'll want 3 to 5 inches of clearance. A road bike should offer between 1 and 1 inches of clearance, while a commuter bike should have 2 to 4 inches. Compare the stand-over height for a given bike to your measurements (inseam + clearance) to determine the right bike height.
Top Tube Length: You can measure your torso to get a good estimate of proper top tube length. First, make a fist and extend your arm. Measure from the center of your fist to the end of your collarbone (the part that intersects your shoulder). Next, measure your torso by placing a book against your crotch with the spine facing up. Measure from the spine to the bottom of your throat (the spot between your collarbones). Finally, add the two measurements (arm length + torso length), divide the number in half and subtract 6 inches. This is your approximate top tube length. Compare this number to a bike's posted top tube length. You can allow for about 2 inches longer or shorter, as most bikes can be adjusted via stem length/height and saddle fore/aft position to make fine adjustments to the fit.
Bikes for Women: Proportionally, women tend to have a shorter torso and longer legs than men. Bike makers design women's bikes that offer a shorter top tube. Many comfort/cruiser bikes built for women may also provide more stand-over clearance.

The Right Accessories When you make a bike purchase, don't forget these crucial add-ons:
Helmet (this is a must!)
Seat pack
Lock
Hydration pack, or water bottles and bottle cages
Spare tubes
Portable bike pump
Gloves

This bike is good looking and you can't beat the price. You will need to take a some time to put it together and double check everything. Make sure you turn the fork 180 degrees. They did this so it would fit in the box. It came packaged good. We're just using the bike for around town with the kids. I would recommend it. FYI, pacific cycle is the parent company for Schwinn and Mongoose bikes so I believe this will be a decent reliable bike for us.
