(More customer reviews)Unless you are mechanically handy, do not buy a bike in a box. Also, the wrong pedals were sent in this box apparently they were 1/2" instead of 3/8" threads. I found this out when I went to pay $40 to have this bike assembled. We like the bike OK, but it cost quite a bit to have assembled and the pedals were wrong.

Mongoose Placid Men's Comfort Bike (26-Inch Wheels) Review

It has a near bottom of the line Shimano RD-TZ30 rear derailleur, a front Falcon derailleur / Suntour crank combo, SRAM MX twist shifters, linear pull V-style brakes, an adjustable seat shock, front shock, and an aluminum frame. The seat tube length is 18", the top tube length is 21", and the stand over height is ~28 - 30" (top tube slopes down to the seat tube). From the seat tube and stand over height, this bike is sized for someone with a 30' - 32" inseam.
The bike comes partially assembled. You have to put the handlebars, front wheel, seat, and pedals on. You will need metric size Allen wrenches. The gears were adequately factory set, but the brakes needed to be adjusted.
I purchased it for occasional street recreational riding. For this purpose, this bike is average. If you want something with better components (more expensive) then look at the GT Nomad / Timberline, Schwinn Sierra / Voyageur, or the Giant Sedona.
Pros: Better price than I found at a local sporting goods chain store and free shipping. Amazon shipped it double boxed. Light aluminum frame. Comfortable seat with adjustable shock tension. Linear pull V-style brakes. Adequate for recreational street biking, which is what about 90% of us do.
Cons: Components, but you get what you pay for. Front and rear wheels are not quick disconnect. One size, if your tall or short this bike will probably be a bad fit for you.

Mongoose Racer Boy's BMX Bike (12-Inch Wheels) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a pretty neat little kids bike. The quality is reasonable for a kid bike in this $60 - $80 range. Go check out the stores for bikes in this price range. They are all made in China, cheap, and heavy for such a small size, especially if you are familiar with high quality adult bikes. As cheap as it is, it should still easily last for many years and will probably live long enough to pass on to multiple kids.
I suspect Mongoose has nothing to do with this bike other than licensing their name to the Chinese manufacturer that makes it.
It comes with a 100+ page book covering all kinds of bike assembly (Which is kind of useless). So there is no instruction sheet specific to putting this bike together, but if you've ever seen a bike before, you can figure out what goes where!
It comes mostly assembled. You have to install the Handlebars, Pedals, Front wheel, and Training wheels (and that's it). You'll need a 13mm and 15mm wrench and a way to air up the tires. The tires are already on the wheels, but not fully inflated. You can probably use an adjustable / cresent wrench if you don't have those metric wrenches. All of the nuts & bolts you need to turn are very easy to get to except maybe for the 13mm pedals. Some adjustable wrenches are thick and bulky and might not fit into the small recesses around the pedal shafts to tighten them.
You'll also need some zip ties or wire ties of some kind to attach the "BMX Racer" logo plate / number plate to the handlebars (if you even want to install it). It should probably come with some zip ties to attach it. Not everbody has those things just laying around.
It weighs 20 - 21 pounds when put together, which is dang heavy for a bike this size. The competitors are all equally heavy. Don't expect any lightweight alloy or creative lightweight design anywhere on these cheap bikes.
I used free shipping and the Bike box was inside a plain brown amazon box. No gaurentees on how your order would ship, but the brown box made it easier to sneak in as this was obviously a gift for a kid that didn't order it himself!
All said, I checked all the stores first, and this bike is equal in quality to anything in this price range, and I think it's way cooler than most of the cartoony or Disney branded bikes that dominate the toddler bike category in the big box stores.

(More customer reviews)I bought 2004 model (same but red/white color). It was on clearance at Amazon for $229.00 total. I used it on the bike lane beside my house with the kids. With the gas sky rocketing I decided to carpool, so started to bike 1 1/2 each way to the subway station to meet my ride and lock my bike with heavy duty cable. There are about 50 to 100 bikes chained to serires of posts. The bike was great. Shifts were smooth, the dual suspension makes you feel that you are riding on air. After couple month my bike was stolen. From all the bike, some were better than mine with less thicker cable, the ..... choose my bike. I was dsapointed, espacially I was enjoying the ride and the smootheness of the bike. Now I'm using my old bike which no one will take even if I left it unlocked. I bought a new Master Lock Street Cuff and a very thick chain (both with warranties to replace the bike if the lock was broken).
Now, I'm waiting for my birthday in August and hoping the bike will go on sale till then.
I strongly recommend the bike. I will buy one in august.

(More customer reviews)I ride about 5 miles a day from home to school and back. Very flat, good weather, easy ride, and I'm not huge or anything. I figured a cheap bike like this would last a year, and then I'd upgrade. I've had it a month, and there have been a number of problems.
In general, the parts are flimsy. The seat post clamp won't prop up the seat. The handlebars are loose because the bolt that holds them comes loose. The bike feels like it's off balance. Also, while making sharp turns, my toes scrape the front tire. Biggest problem - pedals made of really weak plastic that actually ripped. Drivetrain, shifters, and brakes OK so far, but I'm not expecting much.
Do NOT buy this bike if you expect to ride it on a daily basis. Spend 2X or 3X more and get better quality components.

It is light and suspension is good, but stainless steel parts (brakes, spokes) on the bike started to rust after only one month. I've never seen anything like that even with cheap bike I had before. Today I had a spoke broken, and I can see that it's just rusted all the way through. Weight or hard riding was not a problem, I'm only 100 pounds and was riding on the roads. Will take it back to Sports Chalet and see what they will tell me.

(More customer reviews)I bought this bike for my son. I am an extremely experienced cyclist and bike mechanic, so the challenges I overcame with this weren't too serious for me. For example, the bike I received was missing a front axle nut. I replaced the entire axle with a hollow one and a quick release but you could imagine that kind of thing being a pain for a normal person. Some details weren't to my liking and I fixed them. I sawed off a bit off the seat post and a bit off the handlebar ends. This allows the seat post to be set as low as possible for my little rider. I'm no absurd hipster with the handlebar cutting, but having sensible shoulder width bars is always good and these were the normal too-big-for-an-adult mountain bike width. Definitely not ideal for a kid. The wheels were pretty true, but I still felt it necessary to true them up. One of the cable housing routings was about 20% too long and I cut that to the right size. Then it started to look like a bike I'd like to own if I was a kid. One minor problem is that the kickstand is really stiff. Could be worse. At least it's mounted well and it exists at all. On the other hand, the biggest problem with this bike for a young kid is that it is heavy. Very heavy. That frame and those forks are cheap by adding cheap metal. It's a strong bike, but it may be tough for a smaller kid to handle. My kid also had some trouble with the hand strength necessary to pull the brakes. Older kids probably will do fine.

Well this has it, I was looking for something to get back and forth to work with. This in mind i live where there is a lot of curbs and bad roads etc. so I wanted something that had some suspension. 217 bucks plus i bought the Kryptonite 2 lock (35$) i say you cant beat it. It came the day it said it would, box in perfect condition and only need to adjust cables and attach front wheel, just a smidge of an adjustment to the derauiler and everything was just they way it was intended to be. oh and make sure you clean front disc brake BEFORE the first ride to insure it brakes-in the correct way. hope i help any furture buyers out there.

I am no professional but I can say that is fulfilling my expectations, I had a minor problem with the front brake mechanisms but contacted kent international ( Jeep just sold the name, dont manufacture bikes) and they sent a replacement set right away that works perfectly, so far I've owned it for 3 weeks, a few flat tires but who doenst get that? I am switching to other type of tubes later on.
I will update if anything else arises
Sunday June 26 '11. I had a hard time fixing the derrailler (however is written), after jumping off a sidewalk( a simple jump, no big deal) it got stuck between the rim, and had to straighten it. It damaged the rim, left it a bit curved and broke one of the support lines that go from the center to the end. It is now bent and constantly in contact with the brakes leaving no choice I believe but to get a new rim, and probably another derrailer since it was badly damaged. I noticed that the nut and bolt was loose, somehow I thing from factory because it was a part that I did not assemble when I got it by mail. I am checked for more loose nuts and bolts and to my surprise MOST of them were loose, just set to the point the bike wont fall apart, that cannot be good I do not remember in any page of the instructions a sign to check for loose screws or anything like that. I hope Kent responds to this, at least replacing the damaged items...
Thursday 31. While riding in the City, I jumped off a sidewalk and the derrailler completely fell apart. I wondered why did this happened. I will try to describe what I saw, The screw that holds the derrailler was totally...worn, with no grip lines, as well as the base where it is held, in other words, there is no way to screw in back since there are no lines, and there are several small pieces of scrap metal all over the screw hole . I am calling Kent today and see what we can do. The bike's rear tire i still messed even worse, increased the friction with the brake because is disarranged even more. It is quite hard to change shifts, I believe is the derailer that is damaged now, it gets stuck and wont go back itself unless forcing it by hand, so now I have to anticipate way before 2 or 3 gears to have a substancial shift.
It has become a bad experience overall since every time I go out with my bike (which has great aesthetics, but not great quality) is stalling me because of different things. The maneuver is loose, and tried tightening the screws more with no positive result. I dont think I could dare to go into the mountain with this bike, I would be left in the wilderness after the first jump off a rock. THIS BIKE IS CLOSE OR NEXT TO A TRAIL BIKE, USE IT FOR RECREATION, CITY OR AS PAPERWEIGHT.
Again, you get what you pay for...

(More customer reviews)I purchased this bike for two hundred American at a sports specialty retailer, Sports Authority. For the relative low price, I got what I paid for. The bike was heavy at 43 lbs. The dual suspension was a very nice feature during downhill terrains and ramps. The mid section suspension also attempts to be adjustable to accommodate road and rough terrains. I got into a new sport with this bike and was able to learn very fast how equipment can cost more than a motorized version.
I took a spill a couple of months back that set my wallet back a few bucks. The rear rim had to be replaced along with two tire tubes, the rear derailleur, cable housing and cable, and a couple months of back recovery (totaling $90). I also purchased a pair of universal debris fenders for muddy downhill rides and rainy cross-country field trips.
There are a few upgrades that I would recommend for this product. (1) A Kevlar tube liner to protect the tire tube from being punctured by any thorns or nails ($18). (2) Debris fenders for the front and rear tires if applicable (muddy terrain) ($60). And most important of all, a helmet for off-road and long distance cycling.

Let me start off by saying, prior to this purchase I have always been satisfied with all my Walmart, K-mart, Crapmart bikes I've owned over the years. It doesn't take much to satisfy me in the bike department so for me to rate a bike one star says a lot. My boyfriend put the bikes together (we also purchased the men's version of this exact bike). It took awhile to get the brakes adjusted just right but overall everything seemed alright. He got on first and as soon as he turned out of the parking lot I heard the sound of his foot skidding along the front tire. At first I thought his size 13 feet were the culprit, but then I got on my bike and sure enough my size 7s were sliding down the tire as well. Turns out that anytime you turn the bike the front tire comes within two inches of the front of the petal. So if you're someone who thinks their feet may hang at least two inches off the front of the petal don't buy this bike. It's almost as if the frame of the bike was designed for a child and then they just threw on adult tires, seats, and handle bars. Within 5 minutes on the bikes we both agreed these bikes must go back. I'm still baffled as to how these bikes passed the legal requirements required for bicycles. I don't know what the requirements are but dang! Talk about low standards! These bikes are a lawsuit waiting to happen. On the bright side, because I purchased these bikes from Amazon directly I got a full refund including shipping cost. Oh Amazon!... how I love you so...

(More customer reviews)I purchased this bike as part of my plan to cut down on both cost and time getting around NYC, and for all intensive purposes it has accomplished both. This bike works flawlessly for the most part, and I would recommend it to most people looking to purchase a bike.
I say most people because there are a couple of short comings with the Titan Fusion, which if improved upon would make this bike excellent. The fist qualm that I've, is the extra weight that this bike has. Although not extremely heavy I've ridden other bikes that weight less than the Titan Fusion, while at the same time managing to maintain all of the same features. Second, the front shifter is off and must be replaced (contacted Titan customer support). I know some of you might argue that the shifter and derailer are not adjusted properly, thus the difficulty in changing gears. However, after failing to adjust the front gear to the appropriate position I sought out professional help at a local bike store. The mechanic complained that the shifter is not moving the derailer the required distance to change gears.
In conclusion, I would recommend the Titan Fusion to most people who don't mind the extra weight. I would also add that the frame was designed with heavy abuse in mind.
Ps. One of the most attractive bikes that I've seen. I've had friends come up to me and compliment my bike on its looks.

(More customer reviews)A Mongoose is NOT always the 1500 to 3500 dollar bike that we adore. Recently I bought a mongoose for under 200 bucks. It came with what I call cheap wheels and tires very similar to those found on cheaper bikes..When you pay under 200 bucks you can't expect to get the stainless spokes and an almost perfectly tuned bike. I am guessing but I believe most of the cheaper Mongoose bikes may have some generic parts. For example my tires look like cheap 10-15 dollar tires. They are stamped with the load range at 198 Lbs.. HOWEVER, for a low priced bike I am HAPPY with mine and the tires are holding up well. I had to tune the bike and will soon take it apart and grease the bearings and cables. Both derailleurs front and back were not set correctly and she shifted like a dog. The front tire wobbled so badly it would rub on the brake shoe with each revolution and setting the hand brake was almost impossible. I fixed it by simply truing the wheel using a small wrench on the spokes and adjusting the derailleurs. This is easily done. I simply loosen the spoke that pulls the tire off to the side and tighten the two on the opposite side. I make small adjustments at a time until she is fixed.. I tuned the bike and now I LOVE her. Mine has 27 speeds.. I am 62 years old and still buff. I weigh just over 200 lbs. In granny gear this bike pulls hills very slowly and yes it takes some getting used to.. If you tune this bike and take care of it I believe you will get your money's worth unless you end up with a real lemon. It's best to consider what you want this bike to do before you buy. I tool around on the farm on mine and ride trails up to 3 or 4 miles a day just for exercise. If you want professional, pay out the yang, yang..If you want a bike to enjoy in your leisure time then this baby may work for you and save you big bucks too.
