Bell Cruiser 26-Inch Bike Tire Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this Bell Cruiser tire for an older model Trek Singletrack that I'm currently using to commute to work on. I have to admit that I'm surprised at how decent this tire is. It has a road-friendly tread pattern on it, so that I don't feel like I'm trying to bike on knobbies, yet it does grip very well when I do ride on some local trails. It's not even marketed as a multi-use tire, yet it is. Seriously: if you are using an old mountain bike type of bicycle to commute on and want some street friendly tires that work okay on packed dirt trails as well, then try these cruiser tires. I'm very happy with them.

Summary:
Excellent road tire for commuting on a mountain bike.
I purchased the 29 X 2.35 size. Although the size 28 X 2.35 is on the sidewall of the Big Apples, they are physically larger than the 29 X 2.00 MTB tires that came on my bike. These are huge tires! There is minimal clearance between the tire and my front fork. The tire actually makes contact with the fork if I corner too hard. I run them at 65 psi and on pavement these are a dream compared to the sluggish offroad tires that I'm use to. My bike is so much faster and more efficient for across town travel. The Big Apples are definitely heavier than those whimpy looking skinny road tires, but I'm a heavier(235lb.)guy as well. The bulk of these tires will turn most people away but, the bulk is what I was after. They look and feel awesome. They hang in the turns well even with the infrequent and slight rub on the fork, which really isn't enough contact to affect speed or performance from what I can tell. The wide sidewalls absorb some of the bumps and vibrations of the road which is nice.
Strengths:
-Durable; I've only put around 500 miles on my Big Apples but, I've been pretty crule to them. Curbs, pot-holes, dirt trails, broken glass, just a variety of terrain that any other "road" tire would piss themselves over. No problems so far.
-Looks; These massive "road" tires look sweet on a mountain bike. They give my bike a cross functional utilitarian look.

Weaknesses:
Tread pattern performs poorly off road. (Only a weakness is you intend to off road much. I spend 95% of the time riding on pavement. So a road tire makes more sense than a MTB tire.)

Kenda K40-HP Street Wire Bead Bicycle Tire, Gumwall, 26-Inch x 1-3/8-Inch Review

(More customer reviews)A pair of (37-590) Kenda K40 "gumwalls" was used to refresh an older Free Spirit bike. Tires mounted reasonably well considering the condition of 30-year-old rims, but make sure the bead is in fact seated evenly before inflating to recommended pressure. A small rib should be visible just above the rim edge, and will help you judge if tire is in place.
My friend is a very happy camper now, and so am I for being able to help out.
Overall, these tires are good enough for the price, mount, look and roll very nicely. The 26 x 1-3/8" was very hard to find locally, and thank you Amazon for keeping the stock.
* Note: One-star reviews for these elsewhere on Amazon are not all deserved. These are *NOT* MTB-sized 26" tires despite a "26" appearing in the size - read specs carefully.
** Tires came in two large flat packages, but could have easily fit in one. This means the wire beads were not bent even a slightest bit (vs. if two were packed in the same box). Amazon could have easily saved on shipping, but didn't this time, which is a nice touch!

Michelin Country Dry2 Wire Bead Mountain Bike Tire Review

The only problem is that they wear quickly, but they are very cheap compared to many other tires. Also, they wear quickly because they have excellent traction which is what I would rather have. Bottom line is, I highly recommend these tires if you're looking for an all purpose tire. I also highly recommend the seller, BikeSomeWhere who had a great price and fast shipping.

(More customer reviews)It's been a few months since I threw these on both my bike and my wife's. So far we've had no flats, and that includes a lot of curb-hopping, and riding on everything from gravel to urban streets to lawns (shhh, don't tell).
If the majority of your riding is on the asphalt and concrete these tires are a terrific way to improve your rolling resistance. They're a breeze on packed dirt, too. I also find them aesthetically pleasing; the tread looks nicer than some of the more expensive tires, and the logo treatment on the side walls is tasteful and timeless.
Just one word of warning; I read a review somewhere before purchasing these that they out rode some knobbies in gravel. I find this highly unlikely. My first week or so on these I came tearing into some gravel at a little bit of an angle and woah, boy, did that get my heart rate up.
Also, I can only give the tires four stars because, while I haven't had any flats, they offer no flat protection.
Overall this is a great, cheap way for you to speed up a mountain bike, and stave off those urges you get every time you stroll by that road cycle in the bike shop.
Don't think I didn't see you.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the 2.5" 60a version of this tire. I do mostly cross-country riding but I jump at any chance to tear down a rocky downhill as fast as possible! These tires offer AMAZING grip. Previously I owned the Maxxis High Rollers 2.35" also in 60a. These were great tires but the Minion is even better. Its a pound heavier than the HR, but I think it's worth it. The confidence and stability of this tire is well worth the extra weight and cost. It RIPS.

(More customer reviews)I have no idea what Debashish Sahu is talking about in his review. First he says a Schwinn tire would be much better. Then he writes a terrible review on Schwinn Alloy Bicycle Pedals. Everyone & their brother knows Schwinn isn't what it used to be.
I bought a pair from my LBS (local bike shop) for about the same price. Why wait on shipping? The center rib travels quiet & well on city streets & the more aggressive outer tread goes well through the park, light off-road trails or as today (12-15-2010) through light slushy snow still on the road.
Keep 'em pumped up close to the max for city riding. Maybe drop a few pounds out (very few) for off-road. But...then again - I'm a rather large fellow. I keep all the tires on my bicycles pumped pretty full.

(More customer reviews)Nice tire for the money with a compromise tread that lets me ride trails or veer onto the grass to miss snowbirds or panhandlers on the path or the street. Installed on a set of double-wall rims on a vintage ('92) Rockhopper. Note that this tire is 'drive-specific,' and requires some attention on mounting (e.g., 'Drive -->'). BTW, mounting was a snap with only a pair of Park Tool TL-1s - not bad at all for a wire-bead tire!
We'll see how it holds up - but I like the 65-psi max rating - nice for less rolling resistance when fighting cagers in an urban setting!
