(More customer reviews)Hopefully nobody has made the mistake of buying this bike trainer under the assumption that it's a "Magnetic Resistance Trainer", as there are many look-alikes of this same model, and it is very lacking in it's description, to say the least. Make no mistake, this model is a "Wind Resistance Trainer" only(I assume that's what they're calling "Kinetic"?). If u look at the pic it clearly shows a circular fan, opposite the weighted flywheel on the roller assembly, at the botttom of the unit.
That's why it's cheaper than all the other bike trainers available here, obviously.
This trainer is little more than a stationary roller for your bike wheel, providing only the resistance of the weighted flywheel. It offers NO variable, or increasing resistance of any kind, and little if any, wind resistance with that mi-nute circular fan!
I didn't purchase this trainer myself but almost did when I went to order mine (the magnetic version of this same model by the same company, FDW). Don't get me wrong, if very low resistance, low intensity activity is all you need, and u just wanna be active indoors, great. I just don't like being fooled into ordering the wrong item because it looks almost identical to another, and the descriptions are not very distinctive for either version. It doesn't state that it's a "Wind Resistance Trainer" anywhere, and could easily be mistaken for the slightly more expensive magnetic version, which is the one I purchased. It uses variable "magnetic resistance" (currently the best cheap form of stationary bike technology available, unless u wanna spend upwards of $200). Considering I only paid about $80 for mine, it's a great value, and it's pretty effective!
Got mine yesterday, set it up 2day (in no more than 5 mins). Almost comes fully assembled, 5 screws, 1 bolt and ur good 2 go, simple. Mounted my bike in it, after airing my tires that is. Adjusted the roller snugly against my tire, as tight as could go. Got my workout on. I have smooth road tires on my Gary Fisher, "Mako" Mt. Bike, so noise is negligible. I was expecting it to be way louder, I live in a very thin walled apt and it's not a problem. It's everything I hoped it would be. It provides a great workout, esp. w/ the variable resistance. It comes with a handlebar mounted adjustment, levels 1-5, so u can not only switch gears on your bike, but also increase up or down 5 levels on the trainer. It's very sturdy, looks well made, not flimsy. Theres also 2 little plastic "grommets" for mounting your bike axle into the screwtite clamping action of the trainer, which u may or may not use. Comes with all tools needed for assembly(allen key, sm wrench), except a phillips screwdriver. It arrived in about 2 weeks, lil' longer than expected, but I'm pleased with it's overall quality and performance so far. I work with metal and can attest to it's quality construction, we'll see if it lasts.
I used to use the recumbent bikes at the gym, which I find more comfortable, but to have this in my own home and 2 b able 2 utilize one of my own bikes at any given moment is cool, and I can be active while zoning out watching TV, or a movie, or reading...??? Excellent alternative to letting bike collect dust, esp. during bad weather..! I know it's not the same as actual riding outside, but it's a great complement to it, and can also serve as a warm-up before an actual ride..!!
Although I can't comment on the specific product advertised here, only it's near identical counterpart by the same makers (the only difference being the manual level adjustment, and the type of roller assembly), this review can be considered accurate for everything except the few differences. Their construction is likely the same, which is pretty good. Everything appears quality, I'm not disappointed in the least.
I'm very pleased w/ my purchase of an almost identical product by the same company. My point for writing this review is to help people not get fooled by too many shoddy descriptions of advertised products here. Only 3 stars because of this, more if an accurate description was included. :]
