SKS Hightrek Bicycle Fender Set (26-Inch Wheels) Review

(More customer reviews)Greetings. I ordered these for my Trek mountain bike. Regarding the fenders... as the other reviewer said, they do not fit. Holding them up, I guess they would fit the curve of the wheel, but they are impossible to mount, both the front and the back. The 'clip' is only about as big around as a quarter, very tiny. This may fit a 'road' bike or a fixie, but was nowhere near even clipping on my bike. You wouldn't even be able to force it, it would just break. Also, the front hardware just doesn't work, I have no idea how I would even put it on my bike. I consider myself fairly bright, and the instructions were vague, just 4 tiny pictures of what to do.
My bike is a standard size and shape of mountain bike (26"). At least in the description should be a warning that these are only for 'road' type bikes. This does not fit Mountain bikes OR bikes in the size range listed. On top of that, these aren't actually 'clip' on fenders, they are permanent mount, it 'clips' on permanently.
Regarding Niagara Cycle, they won't refund for a return unless the item is unopened. How would you know if it fit without opening the package, which is really just a bag of screws attached to two fenders that are zip tied together. They were both unfriendly and unwilling to facilitate a refund or exchange for another item. They wanted me to pay for return shipping and also not refund shipping both ways. This total cost would be double what the fenders even cost, meaning if it doesn't fit, you are out of luck.
Bottom line, don't buy these. Poor product, poor description, and poor customer service from Niagara cycle.

Serfas E-Gel Hybrid Bicycle Saddle With Cut Out Review

(More customer reviews)This is a really comfortable really well made saddle that can be used aggressively or upright even for a 6'3" 225 pounder.
The multi layer gel padding is very good and the Elastomeric suspension is not at all sloppy but provides very good and solid feeling progressive support.
The "Soloflex" covering is also soft but rain proof which is a real advantage over Lycra (yecch)
I tried the Planet ARS and found it too soft and squishy and at the same time too easy to sit through the padding so it was also too hard. (Hard to screw it up at both ends)
This Serfas E-Gel saddle on the other hand is very progressive and still of a size and rigidity that make it work for aggressive cycling as well.
This is not the fatter cruiser saddle and is proportioned very reasonably.
If you find something more comfortable and still reasonably high performance I would like to know what it is at any price.
Update: I have now tried this saddle on my new single speed 29er mountain bike and like it every bit as much as on my Canondale Jekyll mountain bike.
(I ride mostly on road but also somewhat aggressively off road.)
It is small enough to be out of the way for off road stuff and really really comfortable leaning forward or upright on road.
Another item that really helps for on/off road use are a set of Ergon GC3 handlebar Grips and risers which are really comfortable for long rides and provide an excellent upright alternative to the more forward leaning aggressive riding style normal for Mountain Bikes. Note (Very important) if you get these you will probably need to loosen the handlebar clamps on your brakes and shifter to insure that you get the grips all the way on and seated against the end of the handlebar before tightening them. These are expensive but absolutely worth the money.

Planet Bike Grunge Board Bicycle Down Tube Splatter Guard Fender Review

(More customer reviews)I've got a bicycle without any mounting holes for fenders. It also doesn't have enough clearance between the forks/brakes and tires to jerry-rig a fender. However, I hate not riding my bike because of light rain or a few puddles.
The Grunge Board was the best option that I could find at a reasonable price. It straps onto the downtube with a couple of rubber straps. I've got an 80s racing bike with tight geometry, and the dimensions of the board are small enough to clear the crankarms and the front wheel during turns. But just so (orientation makes a difference).
I've ridden through some big puddles and it seems to do a fairly good job of keeping my pant legs from getting soaked. I still put some scotch tape over the holes/slits around the bottom bracket to keep the gunk from getting in. The board is light enough that I leave it on all the time, even when it's not raining...just in case there is an unexpected puddle.
I have to take off a star because I think the mounting band should have been designed better. First, it hard to push the rubber bands through the narrow slots once they wrap around the downtube. The bands have slits in them that attach to nubs on the underside of the board. The nubs are not large enough to hold the bands in place perfectly securely. They seem to usually work, but the bands come off occasionally. If you have a small diameter downtube (as in most pre-90s, bikes), there are also a couple inches of extra rubber band that just flop around. It shouldn't be too hard for Planet Bike to redesign this retention mechanism, but it's also hard to complain for ~$10.
You can use a couple of cable ties instead of the rubber bands and they'd probably do a better job. You could also use a large soda bottle cut to size and get the same effect, though arguably a bit uglier.

Planet Bike SpeedEZ ATB Front and Rear Bicycle Fender Set (60mm Wide) Review

(More customer reviews)I have an old rigid frame/fork ATB and originally bought for it the 'Planet Bike Hardcore ATB Fenders'--the ones that attach via screws into eyelets on your frame. They fit perfectly and solidly. However the rear fender interfered with my rear rack's mounting; both preferred the same eyelets and I would've had to bend the stays on the fender to get them to coexist. So I reluctantly returned that set for this SpeedEZ fender set with the eyelet-less attachment mechanism.
Now the rear fender fits nicely underneath my rack, but the front fender is quite unstable using only the given mounting fixtures. The part of the front fender covering the back arc of the wheel is well supported by the fender stays, but nothing secures the section of fender at the top of the wheel from rattling around between my rigid fork when on bumpy terrain. The problem is easily remedied by threading a wire through the holes in the bend of my fork and then through holes in the plastic of the fender, but it would have been nice to have the option of the metal bracket extending perpendicular from the top of the fender to screw into the fork bend that you see in the other fender set model (and in the inaccurate picture shown here).
Also the rubber-strap based mechanism of holding the fender stays to the frame is a bit lame in my opinion. Seems like they could have come up with something cleaner and more durable without giving up versatility--perhaps flexible metal clamps with rubber cushioning and screws to tighten.
All-in-all they are durable and do the job.
This after about 1 1/2 months of use: The tab at the end of the rear fender that attaches to your bike frame (with a zip-tie) broke off at the point where it narrows in from the rest of the plastic fender to become a tab. I repaired the fender by drilling a couple holes above the break-off and affixing a metal bracket to hang down as the tab once had and then attaching that to the frame instead. Indestructible? I think not. But there sure aren't many choices out there for full fenders.

Planet Bike Clip-On Front and Rear Bike Fender Set (ATB) Review

(More customer reviews)The fenders seem to be a good fit (size, positioning over wheels), however the mounting hardware included with the fenders assumes the tube sizes are thicker than my bike (2003 Gary Fisher Advance) as using the included bolts and nuts results in the fenders not being tightly adhered to the bike frame, but instead hanging loosely creating an unsafe riding situation. Using some spare bolts and nuts solves the problem.

(More customer reviews)For spending $15 instead of the seemingly standard $30 for bicycle gloves, I am very happy with these. They are very comfortable, protect well against a cold wind, and the sweat-wiping cloth on the index finger and thumb is a nice touch.
My only complaint I have is about the velcro. Sometimes the lycra backing will get caught in the velcro and get ripped up a bit. I don't think it's going to fall apart or anything, but it seems to be a bit of bad design that will reduce the lifetime of the gloves.
All in all, though, good gloves and a great price. Planet bike rocks!

Cateye CC-RD300W Strada Wireless Bicycle Computer Review

(More customer reviews)I've ridden close to 400 miles since I purchased this Cateye cycle computer and been quite pleased with it, but I didn't want to submit a review until I had a chance to measure the computer's accuracy. On my previous bike, I used a Trek cycle computer (wired). The distance measurement the two computers gave for my home to office commute were slightly off. I didn't know which one to believe. So the other day I rode along the Mt. Vernon trail, and when I passed mile marker 17, I checked the Cateye's odometer. When I passed mile marker 18, the odometer was accurate to the hundredth decimal place. I was very impressed.
Raves:
- Accuracy
- Size, style and installation (looks great mounted to the stem)
- ClickTec ease of use (with the Trek I had to fumble with buttons along the top and bottom)
- No ugly wires
Rants:
- Requires 2 batteries
- One time I hit a big bump and the angle of the wheel sensor changed enough so that the magnet and it began to hit each other
2/2/08 UPDATE: The tab on the bracket broke off when I popped the Strada out. I blame the winter cold stressing the plastic. I reported the breakage to Cateye, and then sent me a full parts kit (for mounting a sensor and bracket on a second bike) free of charge. Excellent customer service.

SKS Beavertail Bicycle Fender Set (26 and 28-Inch Bikes) Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this fender set to install on a TREK 4300.
The installation of the front fender was very easy, took no alterations of the mounting hardware and took less than 5 minutes.
The back fender required bending of the mounting bracket. The rear bracket is bent to a 90 degree angle and meant to mount to a rear facing threaded hole. My bike has the threaded hole pointing down toward the tire, so it required the bracket to be bent so that it was straight. It also appeared to require removal of the rear rim to get to the screw to install it. I did find that by letting the air out of the rear tire, I could get the screw mounted with a right angle screw driver (one of those small ones that have a bend on each end for reaching tight places).
In all, it only took about 15 minutes to bend the bracket and mount it, so the installation was still fairly easy.
The front fender is very stable, however because the rear fender is longer and only has one mounting point, it tended to slip out of alignment. I also mounted a Topeak rear rack on the bike, and I found that I could mount a small 90 degree angle bracket to one of the holes that was intended for a light, and then attach it to the rear of the fender. It now is very stable, however, it would be harder to remove. I leave my fenders on all of the time, so it doesn't create any problems for me.
Generally, I think the fenders are great and do an excellent job, even with the wide tires (2.00 x 26). I will mention that since the fenders are intended to work with either 26 or 28 inch tires, they are curved a little less than might be desired for a tight fit on the 26 inch tires. I heated them with a heat gun and found that I could bend them to a tighter curve, so that they fit the tires a little better.

(More customer reviews)This is an extremely comfy saddle. The spring action and padding soak up every little bump, and you get no pain on your sit bones. The cut-out for the male seat is the largest I've seen and that is a huge benefit. The only problem with this saddle is that it is more of a cruiser saddle and strong riders will find that it restricts leg movement causing some pain in the back-inner thigh. I'll probably be buying the next smaller size as that seems more fitting for my style of riding (15-30 miles on paved paths, moderate hills).

Planet Bike 5020 Men's ARS Standard Anatomic Relief Saddle with Gel Review

I'm a male in my mid-30s who has had occasional prostate inflammations over the years (prostatitis). Not surprisingly, bike seats, with all the pressure they put on your perineum (aka your "taint"), have caused prostate soreness for me. Most recently, I bought a comfort bike (more like a mountain bike than a cruiser) that came with a stock Avenir seat. The seat was *very* well padded, with springs Avenir Men's Comfy Soft Top Saddle (Black). Comfortable to sit on, but too wide and mushy for active biking -- not to mention that it put pressure on my perineum.
I did lots of research on bike seats for men, and the research that has been done suggested I either stop biking or get a noseless bike seat. I was sad to think that biking with a saddle that has a nose could lead to permanent prostate pain, not to mention nerve damage, and impotence... I don't want to give up biking, and I'll be honest about the noseless bike seat: not only does it clearly give you less control of the bike, you end of having to explain to everyone why you need such an unusual seat... I'm a little vain, I admit it, but I'm not stupid -- I would use the noseless seat a last resort after exhausting the other alternatives. The Planet Bike ARS Standard 5020 is one of the alternatives I wanted to try first.
Put simply, the seat is awesome! no pressure AT ALL on the perineum for me. The seat doesn't have a ton of gel padding, so it's a lot firmer than the over-the-top plush Avenir seat. I think that's actually going to be better for longer bike rides. I plan on putting lots of mileage on it in the next few weeks, and I'll post an update on how it holds up on long rides.
The seat looks nice, and I'm really psyched about getting on my bike more to commute to work and to explore all the awesome bike paths around my city. So happy with it that it made me write my first Amazon product review ever. And I've bought LOTS of stuff on Amazon.
Planet bike has other ARS seats for men. I wondered, how is this seat different from the (currently) cheaper "Planet Bike A.R.S. Anatomic Relief Bicycle Saddle" also listed on Amazon? Planet Bike Men's A.R.S. Anatomic Relief Bicycle Saddle That one is model # 5000, which you can look at also on the Planet Bike website. That seat is slightly narrower (6.5" vs. 7.0" for model 5020), and not quite as long (10.5" vs. 11"). The 7" width on the 5020 model makes for decent placement of my sit bones on the saddle (I'm about 5'10" and weigh about 150), for my biking style. That is, I sit semi-upright with comfort/mountain bike handlebars. You can go narrower (6" wide) with the ARS Competition: Planet Bike 5022 Men's ARS Competition Anatomic Relief Saddle with Gel. Or you can go to 8" width, with springs: Planet Bike 5019 Men's ARS Spring Anatomic Relief Saddle with Gel and Elastomer Springs.
To sum up, if your "taint" is feeling numb or sore after biking, DON'T IGNORE IT. First make sure your seat is positioned properly, which people at the local bike store can help with. But if that doesn't solve the problem, look into these seats. Your mileage may vary, but these are definitely worth a shot.*************** 1 year update 6/9/2011 ********************
Hi everyone, after a long delay, I have an update. The bike seat now has hundreds of miles on it, and I'm still quite happy with it. Over that period of time, I've also become more serious about cycling and I purchased a road bike with drop handlebars. I've been using the same seat on the newer bike and despite the change in riding position, I'm still liking it. Here is the main observation I've made since using the seat:
- The gel pads are a bit raised, which means that the back part of the seat is a little higher than the nose. much like if you were to mount your seat with the nose tilted down, this can make you lean a touch forward and end up supporting more of your weight on the handlebars (if your hands hurt when you ride, this could be the reason). What I end up doing is tilting the nose up ever so slightly. When I do this everything seems in order. Just don't tilt the nose up too far or you begin to put pressure on your taint again...
So, I remain happy, and I hope you enjoy the seat should you choose to purchase it. I'm thinking of trying out the narrower ARS Competition 5022 model for my road bike (Planet Bike 5022 Men's ARS Competition Anatomic Relief Saddle with Gel), and if I do, I'll post a review on that one. Planet Bike Protege 9.0 9-Function Bike Computer with 4-Line Display and Temperature Review

(More customer reviews)There's a lot to like about this cycle computer. The "buttonless" design works well and allows a large display with most everything you'll need on one very readable page. I was especially pleased to find that, unlike my old CatEye, you can preset an odometer reading. I was also pleased to find that it has a 2 bike capability. You set wheel circumfrence and can preset an odometer readings for each. A single button on the back toggles between bikes. All that's needed is another wire/sensor harness which is relatively cheap. Modes are selected by pressing up on the entire computer and will show an odometer reading for the selected bike or an accumulated reading for both. The clock feature is also welcome.
The only negative is the temperature reading, which proved to be wildly inaccurate. I think sunshine causes a greeen-house effect inside the sealed unit. Whatever, it reads much higher than actual air temperature although tucked away in the garage the reading is reasonably accurate. Temperature reading wasn't a big issue with me anyway.
I couldn't be happier with it!

Actually, I wanted to see all, my speed, time, distance, ride time all in one screen without switching and loosing concentration. Another reason was the 'Temperature' was the major factor. The Temperature is accurate (I checked with my Atomic Clock Thermometer), no issue in there.
The entire ride info (Distance, Average Spd, Max Spd) all remains stored until I hold the switch for 3 sec to reset. Someone wrote 15 minutes, it is wrong. The info stays until I reset. It is only switches to `power save' clock mode. Press the button to see your previous info.
The actual model is Black. Go to PlanetBike web site. Then Products-> Computers to see the actual item. The Amazon picture is wrong (I requested Amazon to update).
The only thing I dislike is the switch. It should have a real push button switch. The switch it has is fake, just to slide the computer over its holder to change the mode. I gave my rating 4 only for this reason. The slide switch I did not like.
The computer is large enough and easy to view and super easy to install.
Remember to align the Spoke Magnet at the same level of the Wheel Sensor where a glossy mark like (-) at the upper side (not the lower side of the Sensor). Do not get confused. See the picture in the manual.
Have fun with your computer. It is a good one.
