Update - After numerous emails with the mfg'r and the total lack of function of the unit, they finally agreed to replace the unit. Waiting for their response with a non functional unit and about to go on a trip, I bought a Cateye with cadence and it works fine. So much for Vetta. Now let's see if I can get my money back.

(More customer reviews)I bought this computer because it is wireless and you can see MPH, odometer and time all at the same time. The wireless works well. I question the accuracy of the computer. It seems off at high speeds. Also, the readout has a 3-4 second delay. So when you change speeds, the computer takes a few seconds to update the display. My wired cateye does not seem to have this problem. For a serious competitor, I think you would want to spend a little more. But for recreational biking it works fine.

Vetta RT233 Cycling Computer Review

(More customer reviews)I've installed a number of these, so I didn't find the instructions confusing at all. The steps are pretty straightforward, and are the same for any cycling computer that doesn't have a sensor for pedaling cadence. You mount the head bracket on your handle bars, the sensor on a fork leg, and the magnet on a spoke. Adjusting the position of the magnet and the sensor can be somewhat tricky, since the gap between them has to be "right." This was the first one that included anything to help you get that gap correct. The spoke mounted magnet has a rubber cap on it, and you adjust the sensor and the magnet until the protruding point on this temporary cap touches the sensor in the right spot, tighten up the clamps and screw, and take the cap off of the magnet.
The only other thing is to route the wire connecting the sensor to the bracket, unless you're installing a wireless model. One pleasant surprise is that this one also included a separate rubber base for the head bracket that accommodated the riser handle bar on my son's bike. Now I just have to get him to look where he's riding rather than watching the speedometer for his top speed. :)

VDO MC1.0 Altimeter/Cycle Computer Review

I bought this computer because I wanted an altimeter, so this review will focus on the alt functions. I researched other altimeter bike computers and found others either had suspect reliability or were inaccurate. Having only read good things about the VDO, I took the plunge.
I decided not to get the wireless version because simpler is better in my opinion.
My first ride with the VDO was 235 km through everything from hard rain to hot sunshine. The VDO worked fine in all those condition. I avoided pushing the buttons during the hard rain because I didn't want to risk getting water into it on my first ride. Plus my attention was elsewhere during the thunderstorms. But like I said, the VDO worked fine under some rather harsh condition.
The display has a lot of info on one screen. Maybe too much info because the screen is a bit crowded and some info is displayed in rather small characters. I'd like to see less info per screen and bigger characters. The % grade readout is particularly small. However, I was able to read all the displays under all the conditions.
The altimeter seems to work very well. I paid particular attention to the % grade display and I never saw it give me unreasonable info, such as negative grade when I was going uphill. I was surprised at the sensitivity of the % grade display. When going up a slight uphill, for example, the display might read 1%. Then say the grade increased a bit and sure enough, the display changes to 2%. I am surprised that the VDO can calculate such slight grades just from the change in air pressure. Remember, a 1% grade is only 1 meter over 100 meters. Nevertheless, it seems to work. The alt gets updated about every 10 seconds and it does have a fair amount of smoothing built in. So if you start going down a 6% grade the display will not jump from 0% to 6%, but rather it will count up from 0% to 6% at an increasing rate. All in all, it seems to work quite well.
Since I just got this computer, I can't comment on its long term reliability. It does have a 5 year warranty, but it appears the only service center is in Germany. Due to this and the other nits I've pointed out, I'd probably give the VDO 4.5 stars if I could. Still, I'm happy with my purchase and I would recommend this computer for someone looking for an altimeter.
The seller shipped on the same day I ordered via Priority Mail so I got the package in a couple of days. Good work!
UPDATE ON 3 SEPTEMBER, 2006:
I've used this computer for a couple of thousand kilometers now, and through a lot more rain, so it's time for a review update.
The computer seems to be holding up just fine. In fact, I'm still using the original battery. The VDO has been through several days of rain and there is no hint of water getting into it.
The clock seems to keep pretty good time. Over the course of a year it was only off a couple of minutes.
I have a friend who owns one of these, and he has at times seen some strange alt data. For example, he says he has seen max grade readouts of 48%. (I didn't know the VDO would register such grades!) He attributes such anomalies to rapid temp changes, such as when you take the computer from an air conditioned room to your bike parked on the street on a hot summer day and immediately start riding. That makes sense, since the alt calculation is dependent on the temp. I have never seen any such strange data on my computer, but I usually leave my computer on the bike.
I don't want to get into an argument with one of the other reviewers, but this computer DOES accurately measure inclines. It calculates inclines by measuring the alt change divided by the distance traveled. So you have to be moving to get a change in the % grade readout. The fact that the grade does not change when you tilt the unit means nothing. The VDO does not calculate instantaneous inclines, but it does measure average inclines.
In conclusion, I'd still give the VDO 5 stars. In fact, I like it so much I bought another one.

Cateye CC-VL510 Velo 5-Function Bicycle Computer Review

(More customer reviews)The Cateye CC-VL510 is a basic bare-bones bicycle computer that handles the most basic functions. I bought it for my new commuter bike (Jamis Commuter 2) so I can track my miles ridden towards my annual goal. My 15 year old hybrid has a still functioning Avocet 15 bike computer and I didn't read the details on the Cateye Velo 5 and didn't realize I wasn't getting average speed and ride time...two features I also track for each ride. Not a really huge deal, for the price I can't complain.
The computer installed easily enough with two minor issues to note.
(1) The computer's components are largely held in place by zip-ties. You may want to make sure you have spare zip-ties on hand, I always find the ones that come from Cateye to be brittle and break easily.
(2) The instructions are hard to follow - the print size is tiny, there are a gazillion different languages on the fold-out poster and you end up having to rely on illustrations w/o any text for the installation. The drawings are sort of vague at best, but fortunately installation is a no-brainer. It doesn't matter how far up or down on the spoke you place the magnet (I thought it did, and had to Google this question because the instructions don't mention this.)
Overall I'm pleased, its about as basic as it gets. I hope it lasts 15 years and then some as my Avocet 15 is doing on my Specialized Crossroads.

SIGMA BC1606L DTS Wireless Bicycle Speedometer Review

You will love the large displays that says "Trip Time" or "MAX SPD" instead of the tiny little letters that the Cateye computers uses like "tr" or "mx".
The design is very intuitive and you will be an expert using this computer in no time. It's very accurate and there are no dropouts with interference due to it's digital link. Ive compared with my handheld GPS over a 20 mile ride, and the results were within .01 miles of each other.
The speed display though, only shows speed in increments of .5 mph, so you will get 25.5mph instead of 25.7mph. Not a big deal to me, but some people might like more info.
I had a trouble with the computer coming off a little too easy, and I called customer support. Their customer service was responsive, nice and quick.
Lastly, the price of this bike computer is much cheaper than the competition taking into consideration it has wireless cadence/speed and a backlight. I also love the fact that is has Average Cadence, stop watch, and total riding time.

Sigma BC 1609 Cadence Bicycle Speedometer Review

(More customer reviews)I really like the bc1609. It was an upgrade for my cateye velo 5 and I enjoy having cadence, average speed and even temperature and stopwatch readings. I also like the fact that it can easily be installed on the stem, as for a road bike handle bar space is limited. So far I got a few hundred miles on this and it worked with no problems.
There are a few minor disadvantages:
- The cadence attachment does not plug into the mount quite as well as I'd like. Especially when mounting on the stem, the contacts need to be bend a little.
- Also for larger frames (I got a 62 cm), the cadence wire is too short to reach the chain stay. So I mounted my cadence sensor on the down tube, works great.
- The front wheel magnet will not easily fint flat spokes (I had to install it at the very center, where my spokes are round).
Having a wired computer has advantages over wireless:
- No transimission problems, once the thing is installed, it works.
- Smaller sensors, especially the sigma sensors hide rather nicely.
- Longer battery life with just one battery.

Shimano XTR PD-M985 Trail Pedal Review

(More customer reviews)I used Shimano M324 for 3 years and just upgraded to these. It's expected that the new top of the line XTR would be better in every way. These pedals didn't disappoint! I was almost used to "hot spots" on the ball of my shoe at the cleat. I've had none of that in the rides since switching. The platform of these pedals provides a pretty wide point of contact under your foot. I feel more stable and strong power transfer into the pedal on strokes.
If you've used SPD cleats before- these work the same. I adjusted the tension to be "loose" so I could rapidly unclip if I needed to get free. It's very natural & quick to snap in or snap out. (I didn't unintentionally unclip one time) My rides since the upgrade have all been dry ground, so I can't speak to how they'll perform in heavy mud and gunk.
I think these pedals look great, have low weight (for so much material) and work perfectly.

(More customer reviews)Ive had the CatEye Enduro 8 for several years now, and ive had a little trouble with it. Sometimes it will not get out of the stand-by or resting mode. I will keep spinning the tire fast, and tinkering with it, and it takes sometimes 15 min to get it to start working, but it always gets going again. This happens when i have to take the display part off my bike when I lock up my bike in a rack, and I dont want it to get stolen. I got a free replacment wire, and it was good for a while, but now its doing it again. It only happens once in a while. Im not sure if it was a bad wire, or if its just that taking the display part on and off makes the connections get dirty, or not lined up just right again.
I didnt have any trouble putting it on my bike, and I really like all the features on it. I rode my bike to work every day, though snow and heavy rain, and the CatEye held up really well. When it was raining hard, I wrapped the display in saran wrap to make sure water didnt mess it up.
If it didnt have that annoying problem with it sometimes, ide give it 5 stars.

Cateye CC-RD300W Strada Wireless Bicycle Computer Review

(More customer reviews)I've ridden close to 400 miles since I purchased this Cateye cycle computer and been quite pleased with it, but I didn't want to submit a review until I had a chance to measure the computer's accuracy. On my previous bike, I used a Trek cycle computer (wired). The distance measurement the two computers gave for my home to office commute were slightly off. I didn't know which one to believe. So the other day I rode along the Mt. Vernon trail, and when I passed mile marker 17, I checked the Cateye's odometer. When I passed mile marker 18, the odometer was accurate to the hundredth decimal place. I was very impressed.

- Size, style and installation (looks great mounted to the stem)
- ClickTec ease of use (with the Trek I had to fumble with buttons along the top and bottom)
- No ugly wires
Rants:
- Requires 2 batteries
- One time I hit a big bump and the angle of the wheel sensor changed enough so that the magnet and it began to hit each other
2/2/08 UPDATE: The tab on the bracket broke off when I popped the Strada out. I blame the winter cold stressing the plastic. I reported the breakage to Cateye, and then sent me a full parts kit (for mounting a sensor and bracket on a second bike) free of charge. Excellent customer service.

Planet Bike Protege 9.0 9-Function Bike Computer with 4-Line Display and Temperature Review

(More customer reviews)There's a lot to like about this cycle computer. The "buttonless" design works well and allows a large display with most everything you'll need on one very readable page. I was especially pleased to find that, unlike my old CatEye, you can preset an odometer reading. I was also pleased to find that it has a 2 bike capability. You set wheel circumfrence and can preset an odometer readings for each. A single button on the back toggles between bikes. All that's needed is another wire/sensor harness which is relatively cheap. Modes are selected by pressing up on the entire computer and will show an odometer reading for the selected bike or an accumulated reading for both. The clock feature is also welcome.
The only negative is the temperature reading, which proved to be wildly inaccurate. I think sunshine causes a greeen-house effect inside the sealed unit. Whatever, it reads much higher than actual air temperature although tucked away in the garage the reading is reasonably accurate. Temperature reading wasn't a big issue with me anyway.
I couldn't be happier with it!

Actually, I wanted to see all, my speed, time, distance, ride time all in one screen without switching and loosing concentration. Another reason was the 'Temperature' was the major factor. The Temperature is accurate (I checked with my Atomic Clock Thermometer), no issue in there.
The entire ride info (Distance, Average Spd, Max Spd) all remains stored until I hold the switch for 3 sec to reset. Someone wrote 15 minutes, it is wrong. The info stays until I reset. It is only switches to `power save' clock mode. Press the button to see your previous info.
The actual model is Black. Go to PlanetBike web site. Then Products-> Computers to see the actual item. The Amazon picture is wrong (I requested Amazon to update).
The only thing I dislike is the switch. It should have a real push button switch. The switch it has is fake, just to slide the computer over its holder to change the mode. I gave my rating 4 only for this reason. The slide switch I did not like.
The computer is large enough and easy to view and super easy to install.
Remember to align the Spoke Magnet at the same level of the Wheel Sensor where a glossy mark like (-) at the upper side (not the lower side of the Sensor). Do not get confused. See the picture in the manual.

Because there is no other bike computer that boasts a name brand company, has as many features, and costs as little as this one! I made sure to read all the reviews on Amazon before I purchased this, and I find it disheartening that I was almost swayed to *not* buy it. Fortunately, I read between the lines of all the negative comments and figured their age and/or grammar explained why they had difficulties with the device.
To start, almost everyone is correct in stating it's difficult to install; honestly, it is! The instructions suggest a 1mm distance between the magnet and the sensor, which basically means: as close as you can get it without the two pieces hitting! To achieve this, the task takes a considerable amount of fiddling, but once you find the right spot on the fork and spoke to where they come closest without hitting, you're golden. I spent about 10 minutes doing this. After the magnet and sensor were on, the setup of the computer was a breeze. It asked for wheel diameter (which is required if you want accurate readings of speed, distance, etc), age, weight, time settings, etc. If you read the instructions, it will explain how to set each of these values.
I want to address a few of the complaints on this page. The first was from a young man who said he was riding 60 mph. Your problem: you didn't set the correct wheel diameter! The instructions provide you a handy chart to tell you what code to type in based on the corresponding diameter. Now, if you don't know what a diameter is, or don't have the intelligence to look it up online, you probably shouldn't be using this computer in the first place. If your wheel is 26" and you set it to 15", yes, you will not have the correct and accurate display of your speed!
I read another review that said he couldn't figure out what buttons to push. Answer: READ THE DIRECTIONS! The directions tell you what to push, for how long, and when. They do this for all displays and all features. If you can't figure that out, I don't know what else to tell you. Honestly, there are 2 buttons, are you that stupid?
I read another review that said distance traveled couldn't be reset, nor could the calories or fat burned. WRONG! Yet again, people fail to actually *read* the instructions, and have the nerve to come online and submit a negative review. There are 7 displays that are shuffled with the *right* button. The *odometer* display does not reset, because it's just that, an odometer. Do you reset your car odometer, too? What you're looking for is the *tripmeter* display. The tripmeter can be reset by holding the *left* button for 2 to 3 seconds. When you reset the tripmeter, you also reset the trip timer, and the average speed value which was set during your previous trip. To reset the calories burned or fat burned, go to that feature display, and hold the left button for 2 to 3 seconds. Simple enough?
In summary: this computer is accurate in all its features if you read the instructions and input the correct wheel diameter. Speed, distance traveled, average speed, trip timer, temperature, and everything else, I have found to be 100% accurate. I checked the speeds against a driver and the temperature against a 3rd party thermostat. Since I've only used this product for a couple weeks, I can't tell you how durable or what's its longevity will be, but if the features and accuracy mean anything, I should be using this computer for a long time.
Quick note to everyone who set this thing up wrong and feels foolish for complaining: if you input the wrong diameter, press both buttons down at the same time for 3 seconds and it will reset the whole device so you can input data from scratch. If your speedometer is reading out "0.0" while you ride, you have the sensor and magnet setup wrong. Try to align the magnet with the arrow next to the "Sensor" text.
The key to having a pleasurable experience with this bike computer is to read the instructions. If you don't feel like reading instructions, don't buy this. If you feel you can bare with the idea of reading a bit and want a great piece of hardware at the lowest price on the market, BUY this device.
