I used to race motocross and have only done a little mountain biking. I found that I can ride as hard as I want up and down rocky paths and this bike performs. Components seem to be high quality considering the low price point. I've been very happy with this bike.

Men's Forge Sawback 5xx Mountain Dirt Bike - Charcoal (19") Review

Men's Forge Sawback 5xx Mountain Dirt Bike - Charcoal (19)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Let me start out by saying that this is my first review for any of the many purchases I have made through Amazon.com. I never write reviews, but for this purchase, I felt the need to spread my story.
I will list my opinions, observations and experiences with each major part of the bike. As for me, I just started trail riding, but have been working with bicycles my entire life. I used to be a hardcore BMX freestyle rider, and I always put the quality of a bike and its components, comfort, and dependability before anything else. (Safety is important as well, but IMO, if it meets those three, it will be safe :) )
Frame: Appearance wise, it looks really good. It is definitely a different color than most bikes on and off the road. Almost like a light navy gray. The paint has held up pretty good so far, although I am extremely rough on this bike. Its already got a few scratches and dings, but no chipping or anything horrible. The welds are perfect, and I mean perfect. I have seen many bikes in this price range, and no welds have looked this good. The frame is very rigid, it doesn't have any give when jumping a curb or random log. It has drilled and tapped holes for two water bottle mounts, and for a rear rack. Overall, I give the frame 9/10. Minus one point not having more size options, even though it's perfect for me (5'11").
Tires: The tires are great for off-road/trail use. They will work on pavement, but you will quickly notice a really loud roar. I have already gotten one flat tube, from a really tiny thorn. I wouldn't expect these to handle a whole bunch of abuse, but for the average trail and road rider, they are fine. The tread is about half way gone, but I have put about 500 miles, on and off road. I give the tires 6/10. Better than a Wal-Mart tire, but not the best.
Rims: Awesomeness. Very, very tough. I have given these rims hell, and they keep on spinning. Light and just the right amount of give. WTB rims are some of my favorites. 9/10. Hubs are on the smaller side, but so far, super awesome.
Brakes: Super awesomeness! The brakes work amazingly well, wet or dry, dusty or clean. No noise, until about a week ago. My front disk is starting to make some vibration noise, but I haven't looked into it yet. Might be time to tighten it up. I bought a $250 bike from Wal-Mart.com that had disk brakes, and Lord... they were soooooo annoying! A loud screech at every stop. These are pretty great for the money. 8/10. Super strong.
Drivetrain: Gears. Gears. Gears. Times nine, equals, 27! Math is fun... Gears are fun... This bike can climb some STEEP hills... With no effort... Sitting down. No slips, no grinds, came perfectly tuned, and I almost couldn't stop riding. The Shifters work great, but there are no numbers on the display. Just an arrow and some lines. They work well though. Buttery. Like a burnt piece of toast with ice cream and butter on top. Or, like a finely tuned bicycle. 9/10. Keep it oiled...
OVERALL: "This bike feels really tight, well-made." My sister.
"Nice wheels!" Some guy in a park.
And I couldn't find better words. This is a great bicycle, and is overly well worth the money. Price some of it's components online and in local shops, and your mouth will look like this...... O ....... round-mouth, lol. Seat and grips are okay, but what the crap, it's a seat and grips. Overall, I get great satisfaction every time I ride this bicycle. I think you will, too.
LOCK IT UP WITH BIG CHAINS AND U-LOCKS!!!! PEOPLE CUT CABLES WITH ONE HAND, WHILE WAVING AT THE POLICE!!!!!!!!

Thruster 29er Men's Mountain Bike (29-Inch Wheels) Review

Thruster 29er Men's Mountain Bike (29-Inch Wheels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
i bought this bike because i wanted to try out the larger 29 inch wheels without spending a fortune. the price was right. out of the box the bike requires a bit of assembly but it's not too bad. i was really surprised at the high quality of the frame. the frame drop outs look like belonged on a bike costing a lot more. the components are okay, i'll probably upgrade the fork. the ride is what impressed me most. i can see how the larger wheels help you go over bumps and rocks easier. i'm really happy with this bike and will probably upgrade components as needed. highly recommended for the price.

This is my first 29er. I have riding a 26 full suspension for 3 years. After a bad crash and practically totaling out old bike, I decided to get a new one. Strapped for cash, I looked for a bargain. I came upon the Overdrive and have been toying with getting a 29er. Needless to say, I love the bike. Strong and sturdy for a 230lb guy like me.

Tree roots, rocks, bumps - whatever is ahead in the trail, the big wheels of the Diamondback Overdrive will keep on rolling. The 29'er butted aluminum frame is paired with an SR Suntour XCT MLO 100mm travel fork complete with mechanical lock out.24 gears controlled by SRAM X-4 shifters and rear derailleur allow you a multitude of gears to choose from and the double wall rims will be sure to keep you going down the trail. When it is time to stop rely on the Tektro Novela mechanical disc brakes.Granted, the Overdrive will not do all the work for you, but it will sure make your job easier.

Diamondback Response Comp Mountain Bike (2011 Model, 26-Inch Wheels)

As already mentioned, the specs listed are not correct. Correct are listed below:The bike that comes is still a great bike. The SR-suntour XCR for has a remote lockout which works great. While rockshox are more well known, the fork has handled anything I've thrown at it. The only dissapointment in the bike so far is the wheels are a little less than 'great'. Stock wheels tend to be crap most the time, but these gave out on my first real trail ride. Taco'd with little to no force. Otherwise, its a great spec'd bike for the cost. The hydarulic brakes work adequatly and the shifting is nice and smooth. Overall a great bike for anyone new to the sport.Frame & Fork

Mongoose Tyax Sport Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels) Review

Mongoose Tyax Sport Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I got this bike as after a short stint with a department store bike that even with a "full" suspension, does not hold a candle against the Tyax. Needless to say I needed something more reliable and actually listed in the Mongoose site (none of the department store's Mongoose bikes are listed). Ordered it at a LBS (amazon is great in shipping times but did not use it for this purchase) and got it within a week. As you can notice on the pictures, the bike simply looks beautiful. The welds on the frame are rock solid, adding to the sturdy feel of the bike. The suntour fork has a small travel adjustment and can be locked out for smoother rides, which imo is a huge plus. The disk brakes allow the bike to brake faster without messing with the rim and after several rides they still brake right on the spot. Took the Tyax for a ride in a local paved trail and the bike performed as expected from a bike in this price range: shifters kicked in smoothly, the saddle was not too unconfortable after long rides, brakes react right on time so on and so forth. However it wasn't until I took the bike off road that I truly appreciated this bike. Going uphill in a light trail (small loose rocks; not huge jagged rocks) seemed very effortless. The combination of the Kenda tires and the light frame made it very easy to climb. My previous department store bike had a "full" suspension, meaning that it has a frame shock absorber as well as a fork shock absorber. This made the bike heavy and at times annoying since it would bounce from the frame. The hardtail is a clear winner because it is a lighter, sturdier and just a cool looking bike. So if you're looking for something fun that will take some occasional punishment this is your bike.

Schwinn 2008 Sumac GSD Men's Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels, Medium) Review

Schwinn 2008 Sumac GSD Men's Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels, Medium)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
People who know about bikes know that the Schwinn Sumac is not a department store bike. In fact, this bike is identical to the Schwinn Mesa GSD except for the paint colors. The Schwinn Sumac is a A-list bike with premium components, again all identical to a bike whose price is more than triple that of the Sumac. Check for yourself at BikePedia.com. Every component and part number match up exactly.
This bike comes completely set up right out of the box - and packaged very well, by the way. Install the front wheel, handlebars and pedals and that's pretty much it. The front and rear disc brakes are already adjusted. The front and rear derailleurs are perfectly in sync. Ride the bike and feel the fine-tuned ride this bike provides.
The shifters are absolutely top-notch. A flick of the thumb and the derailleurs snap into gear; no slipping, no grinding - it's one satisfying click. The disc brakes are such a nice touch, and work so well. I defy anyone to find a bike with front and rear discs anywhere near this price. Good luck.
One word of caution: this bike only comes in medium frame size, intended for riders 5'6" to 5'10". They're not kidding. I'm 5'10" and I fill this frame up to the max. The seat post is almost all the way up and I can just barely extend my leg. Keep this in mind before deciding on this one. But if you're in that height range, there is no better choice.

As far as Full Suspension bikes go, you won't find a better bike for the price. All of the adjustments on the front and rear shocks make this bike incredible for all types of terrain and rider preferences. The only reason I would give it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I have had trouble with the derailleurs...Great components though, just not made for this bike. IE the front derailleur adjustments cannot be reached without special tools because of where the frame sits...kind of frustrating but obviously not a deal breaker.

Jeep 29er Comanche Mountain Bike (18.5 Inch, Satin Copper) Review

Jeep 29er Comanche Mountain Bike (18.5 Inch, Satin Copper)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The bike was easy to put together and the parts gave the feeling of good quality. It is incorrectly stated in the product info that the tires are 28 inches....they are in fact 29. The bike feels light for it's size. The handle bar is nice and big and has a cool tapered style. Nice grips. It sits high so no need for fooling around with a stem raiser. I'm 6 feet tall and 200 pounds.....finally feel like I have a bike that is the right size for me. Plenty of clearance between your feet and the front tire as you turn. The front shock is excellent and very smooth....the bike bounces over potholes nicely. I don't miss the rear shock. Love the lever shifters....the rear derailleur is heavy duty.....the gears feel much different than 26". I've been on 5 rides from about 5-10 miles....half city and half trails....where I used to cruise in 13th speed, I tend to do about 11th speed on this bike. I'm adjusting to using lower gears since gear for gear, it takes more torque with the 29" tires as compared to 26". The front disk brake is also heavy duty and works well and so does the back linear pull. The seat post is generous at about 12" but I still needed a longer one and a comfort seat...I could do without the jeep branding but who cares. The bike is made by Kent in case you didn't figure that out. I also added rear fender, water bottle holder and bar ends that I use to sit upright to take stress off my back. It's big and beautiful and excellent for the price! I love it!

Diamondback Response Sport Mountain Bike (2011 Model, 26-Inch Wheels) Review

Diamondback Response Sport Mountain Bike (2011 Model, 26-Inch Wheels)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Diamondback Response Sport is a very good value in a hardtail mountain bike as you are getting a relatively high end frame design with mid range components. The modified top tube design is a strengthen design borrowed from higher end Diamondback models and similar to some Specialized bikes.
The only catch is that the shift levers and front caliper are not up to the same quality as the rest of the package. The platform pedals are OK for around town and park trails, but you may want to upgrade them for serious single track riding.
I combined this with a top quality suspension seatpost which I find to be the optimum combination of lighter weight and control with some softening of the roughest bumps. The Diamondback site and some retailers have a more complete description of which frame size is most appropriate for your height. The advantage of buying from Amazon is that you can readily get XS, S or XL frame sizes rather than having to settle for Medium or Large at a local shop or sporting goods box store.
The bike arrives mostly assembled, but plan to spend a full Saturday afternoon to correctly reset the derailer travel limits and align the front caliper if you do not take it to a local shop for a professional tune up.

Jeep Cherokee Men's Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels, 19-Inch Frame) Review

Jeep Cherokee Men's Dual-Suspension Mountain Bike (26-Inch Wheels, 19-Inch Frame)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bike is a great value for $249. It has an excellent gear shift system, great brakes, comfortable dual suspension, decent saddle and very nice appearance. It needs much better instructions on how to center the front disk brake and stem/handle bars. The Jeep Cherokee Sport provides a very good ride on pavement and moderate trails. I have not taken it out on rugged trails because I do not have the necessary stamina and not because I do not trust the bike. Shipment box had one hole in it resulting in a small scratch but otherwise the bike shipped quite well through FedEX. I gave my much more expensive road racer bike to my son because of the harsher ride and bent over rider position which at my age was now uncomfortable. I enjoy riding this bike much more than the racer even though it is a little heavier at 38.5 lbs. I would highly recommend this bike but believe maufacturer needs to supplement assembly instructions on how to center and adjust the disc brakes.

Got it this weekend and started riding it as soon as I could. I had to adjust a few things to my liking but that was just personal prefence. Havent been able to take it on some serious rides yet but will do soon. I was able to do some small jumps and ruff terrain, over all it rides well and is very sturdy. This is my first semi expensive bike, and believe me it is extremely different than the Wolly world brands I was used to. For now I would say well worth the money.
Packaging was very nice and very fast delivery.

What is a Recoil? The dictionary defines recoil as "to spring or come back; react." The Diamondback Recoil takes that definition to heart.Whether it is flying down the wide open trail or making its way through twisty single track, the Recoil will react to what is under its tires and then spring back and be ready to take on what comes next. With an aluminum 4" travel frame, Tuff Shock Coil rear shock, SR Suntour XCT fork and 24 gears to choose from this bike will not cower in fear.Instead it will spring into action and give you a great ride.
