I took a chance getting this unreviewed item. For me it was a complete failure but for Iphone owners it may work better. I hate giving a 1 star review, but it's completely unusable for me and a total waste of money.
First let's talk about the good:
- good construction: the main material is strong and sturdy
- intelligent design: if you look at it from above and imagine it's a "0" the zipper goes from the 2 sides and the bottom. When unzipped that flap can be opened 180 degrees (pivoting on the unzippered area) and on the inside there's a slit to squeeze the phone in. It's a tight squeeze for the Droid but that's probably a good thing. The good part about this is the top of the "0" has no possible entry for dust and water so your phone should be protected.
On to the bad:
- The thing is way to big. Now I know it has to be big enough to carry a phone but it still seems like they could have made it smaller. It bulges out on each side about 1/4-1/2 inch from the side of your phone- this is because what provides the stability in the side wall seems to be a single piece of plastic that is bent into a circle; If it were 4 straight pieces that where made into a box structure I think there'd be much less bulging and the bottom base could be narrower. The thing is also way too long, probably about 1.5 inches longer (or more) than my droid, so long that if you try to stand over your top tube your genitals are going to be slamming up into it. When I pedal my knees very lightly brush up against it, just an annoyance and if you bike with your knees more out I think you'd be ok. However, when I stand to pedal (e.g., going up a steep hill) and my bike is moving more from side to side while I pedal I am hitting it much harder. This also becomes an issue when you turn your handle bars it will also move since the strap is connected to the area under the stem. I've used the Bontrager Speed Box for other uses which is a similar idea and it worked since it was much smaller, I'd occasionally hit it with my knees when climbing but just minor contact.
- Speaking of the straps..why are they so long? I could probably attach the thing around my upper arm. When I tried to put it on the straps where so long I couldn't get a snug fit so I had to cut their length in half (now I can't return it). Not a problem now unless it were to fray in the future.
- Because there's so much excess room vertically it's near impossible to wake up the phone out of idle mode while in the case. Now this is where iPhones might be better because maybe that button is on the screen area, for droids where the button is on the top of the phone you can't turn it on. If you have the phone near the top edge and I try to press through the case it just pushes the phone down. If the phone is all the way at the bottom there's just way too much case to push through. Therefore the fact that this thing has a clear cover to see my phone is a moot point. If I were to just have my screen stay on while using GPS it would burn through the battery life before my ride would finish. I was hoping to be able to turn my phone on occasionally and see GPS location on a map in the Mytracks application, but now to do so I have to stop, get off my bike to turn on my phone which is not any easier than if I had it in my saddle pack and at least I wouldn't have to worry about that big bulky pack.
